Clubs

Welcome! Below is a list of fly fishing clubs that appear to be alive, well, and still meeting throughout Southern California, from San Diego up through Orange County and into Los Angeles County. If you’re looking for clubs farther north, you’ve wandered into Central California territory, and that’s outside the scope of this site. Since I’m based in Southern California, I’ve kept the focus on the waters—and the clubs—I know best.

So why dedicate a page to fly fishing clubs in the age of YouTube tutorials, Facebook groups, and endless internet advice? Simple: clubs still matter.

Fly fishing clubs are where you can learn to cast without having to pause and rewind a video twelve times. They’re where fly tiers gather to swap patterns, guest speakers share hard-earned knowledge, and anglers trade fishing reports that may or may not be 100% scientifically accurate.

More importantly, clubs get people off their screens and onto the water. Whether you’re brand new to fly fishing or you’ve been at it for years, clubs offer a chance to improve your skills, discover new fisheries, and meet people who won’t give you a strange look when you start talking about mayfly hatches over lunch.

In short: if you want to become a better angler, make a few fishing buddies, and spend more time actually fishing, a fly fishing club is a pretty good place to start. Plus, the fish stories are free.

Sierra Pacific Fly Fishers
Location: San Fernando Valley, CA.

We are dedicated to educating the public about fly fishing, conservation, and the restoration of habitat.The organization provides classes on fly casting, fly tying, rod building, as well as conservation. We offer social gatherings and fishing trips, too! We support Project Healing Waters, and Casting for Recovery.

From Their Website: Founded in Santa Monica, California in 1965, Wilderness Fly Fishers is one of the oldest fly fishing clubs in the Los Angeles area. It is a not for profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the preservation and improvement of all fishing waters. WFF promotes stream and river protection with self-sustaining fish populations through conservation, environmental activism, catch-and-release ethics, and education.

Long Beach Casting Club
Location: Long Beach, CA.

From Their Website: Long Beach Casting Club was founded in 1925. With a mission statement that begins with the word “educate,” our campus includes a lighted pond, audio visual-equipped classroom, devoted instructors and decades of experience teaching fly tying, casting, rod building and other how-to seminars. It’s no wonder the Club has improved the skills of literally tens of thousands of fly fishers.

From Their Website: The Fly Fishers Club of Orange County was conceived in late 1965 by Mark Kerridge, who, at the time was teaching a fly tying class through the Anaheim Parks and Recreation Department. It looks like they offer fly fishing trips, monthly casting lessons, guest speakers at their meetings, fly tying and more.

Deep Creek Fly Fishers
Location: Riverside, CA.

From Their Website: Their Mission Statement is to encourage angling with artificial flies, to educate its members in the art of tying flies, building rods and fly fishing, to encourage the conservation of wild trout, warm water and salt water fish populations and to encourage and assist youth to become fly fishers and a conservationist. They offer hosted trips,  casting lessons, rod building and fly tying. From the looks of it, it’s a very active club. Their calendar looks packed with activities.

Streamborn Fly Fishing: Located in Redlands, CA.

From Their Website: Promote the sport of fly fishing, provide a forum for fly fishers, instill knowledge and skills related to the sport, conserve our fisheries, educate those interested in the sport, organize outings and activities. At this time, they hold their meetings in Redlands, CA at an eatery. It looks like they eat, do about an hour of fly tying and then hold the meeting.

From Their Website: Founded in 1957, the San Diego Fly Fishers club promotes the sport of fishing with a fly rod through education and conservation. Everyone is welcome: families, singles, men, women, youngsters and oldsters! They offer weekly fly fishing outings in the saltwater bays, hosted trips,  casting lessons, rod building and fly tying. From the looks of it, it’s a very active club.

From Their Website: Golden State Flycasters is a fly fishing club dedicated to the preservation of fisheries and fly fishing. GSF was formed in 2002 to serve the interests of fly fishers in north San Diego County, South Orange County, and Camp Pendleton.
